    Tuesday Talkback

"To the woman talking to the cashier at Dave's on Lakeshore Boulevard on a Sunday morning. I overheard you calling someone a dumb person behind his back. How would you like it if someone called you dumb or something of inferior quality? You or anyone else is no better or perfect. Every person in the world forgets sometimes. As for you, you're a judgmental hypocrite without a care in the world. Furthermore, you had forgotten things in life and you probably still do." - Cleveland

Don't talk about someone behind his back -- instead, confront him anonymously in the newspaper, and call him a "judgmental hypocrite." Much better!

I was surprised at how well people used to obey that "Don't talk about others behind their back" thing. I recently ran across some "Party Notes" from the 1920s.

They look a lot like "Thank You" notes that people still send, and came with a little notebook. Apparently you were supposed to keep track of who you gossiped about in the notebook and then send one of the cards on Monday. The cards say "Thinking of you, you tramp." on the outside and you can jot down the specific insult on the inside.

The Spanish Civil war got started by one of those cards.

If only Paris Hilton had better than an 11th grade education, maybe such notes could be brought back into vogue.
